The Model’s Workshop was founded in February 2009 by Monica Balut as a group dedicated to the ongoing professional development of Second Life Models. It is a post-graduate institute of sorts created and maintained by the collective effort of many people. It is based on the premise that the collective knowledge and work of a group far exceeds that of any of its members. The idea is for models to share their knowledge and participate in activities to help each other grow in the business–everyone profits.
The group has held many workshops and events since its inception. The cornerstone of the group has been its regular workshops most often held on Thursdays. The workshops focus on a different topic led by a different guest speaker each time. Other recent regular events have included a chat group where models discuss a variety of topics, and a Styling Challenge where models compete within a theme for bragging rights.
Other time limited workshop series have also been held, such as basic modeling skills, photography and photo editing, video modeling, as well as general workshops favorable to European evening times. For a while, the group held another series of styling contests called Make-It-Work.
The group has also put on fashion shows, launching MW FASHION-5 in 2014, a series of five shows, featuring one designer or brand each show and presented by five models. The aim is to give relatively inexperienced models a chance to gain experience in a live show. It also gives other members the experience of being part of a fashion show production team.
The group is open to any project that fits within its mission of fostering the ongoing professional development of SL models. If you are interested in being a guest speaker or in leading a project or otherwise doing an activity that promotes the careers of models, please contact our management team.
All activities at Model’s Workshop have always been, and always will be, completely free. None of the members nor guests are paid for the work done here. Everyone’s efforts are voluntary.
We welcome additional members who are willing to share their knowledge and time for the benefit of the group and models. If you would like to join the group, search on Model’s Workshop in the SL viewer under the Groups tab, or touch the main sign in the Model’s Workshop lobby. Membership is free.
